Description

An older man with a grey moustache and curling grey hair sits leaning forward, a dark cap on his head and a pipe held to his lips between two fingers. He wears a dark waistcoat over a loose white shirt, and in front of him on the table stand a tall glass of beer and a smaller glass beside it.

Renoir sets the sitter’s ruddy, weathered face and pale blue eyes against a warm, loosely brushed brown background, so that attention stays on the folds of white sleeve and the glint of light on the glasses. The handling is direct and confident, with none of the softness Renoir gave his younger female sitters.

This piece is offered as a hand-painted oil reproduction on canvas or as an archival giclee canvas print, a reproduction of Renoir’s original portrait, which is held at the Clark Art Institute and not the painting itself.

The craft

The oil edition of this Renoir artwork is painted by hand on canvas. A canvas art print reproduces the image in ink, with the brushmarks visible in the picture rather than raised paint.

  • Oil editions painted individually by studio artists
  • Canvas prints reproduce the image on canvas
  • Individually quality-inspected before it leaves the studio
  • Made to order in your chosen size and presentation

Materials & Care

Materials

The oil reproduction is painted on cotton canvas; the art print is printed on canvas. Rolled canvas arrives without a stretcher. Stretched canvas is mounted on a wooden stretcher frame; thin and thick frames are separate presentation choices.

On request, the studio provides a certificate for your hand-painted reproduction; it certifies the studio's work, not an original by the artist.

Care

Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid cleaning products, prolonged direct sunlight and damp conditions.

Sizing

Choose a size and presentation in the options above. Both editions keep the original image proportions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What sizes is this reproduction available in?

This portrait is available in a range of standard canvas sizes, and can also be scaled toward the original's dimensions of roughly 59 x 47 cm. Contact us for a custom size.

Is this a hand-painted reproduction or a print?

You can choose a hand-painted oil reproduction on canvas, painted by hand after Renoir's original, or an archival giclee canvas print. Both are reproductions made after the work at the Clark Art Institute, not the original.

How is the piece delivered and how long does it take?

Every order is made to order and shipped worldwide, arriving ready to hang. Hand-painted oil reproductions take longer to produce than canvas prints, since each is painted individually.
