Description
A reclining bather lies on her back across a white cloth, one arm curled behind her red hair, her body turned so the full length of her stretches toward the lower right of the canvas. Behind her a bank of autumn foliage glows in red, gold and green, opening at the right onto a strip of open countryside with a single slender tree.
Painted in 1904 and once in the Stavros Niarchos collection, the canvas (54 by 65 cm) sets the warm, rounded figure against that richly coloured autumn screen. The print holds the reds and golds of the foliage close to the warmth of the skin, so the whole picture reads as one continuous glow rather than figure and background pulling apart.
