Description
A close cluster of stone farmhouses with warm ochre walls and red brown roofs fills most of the canvas, wooden fencing and overgrown greenery pressed right up against the buildings. Above them, a heavy sky of purple grey clouds crowds the rooftops with barely a strip of light left showing.
Painted at Essoyes, the Champagne village where Renoir’s wife grew up and where the family kept a house, the picture leans into the drama of the storm light rather than softening it, warm walls held tight against a darkening sky.
Reproduced as a hand-painted oil on canvas or as an archival canvas print, in a range of sizes, framed or unframed.
