Description

Heavy blue and violet clouds mass over a field of warm rust orange and red, the ground painted in thick, urgent strokes that push right up against a band of dark green scrub on the horizon. A small white house shows faintly at the left, the only pale note in a dramatic, weather-charged sky.

The picture is unusually bold for a Renoir landscape, the ground almost as saturated in red as a sunset, the sky heavy rather than luminous, closer in mood to an approaching storm than his more familiar sunlit fields.
