Description
A man in a long dark coat and hat stands at the left, half turned toward a bright window hung with a pale curtain, while a young woman with red hair sits at right in a dark blue dress, her chair drawn up close to a golden-ochre wall. The two occupy separate pools of light and colour, the man silhouetted nearly black against the pale window, the woman lit warmly against the gold.
Painted in 1875 and held by the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart, the canvas (62 by 51 cm) sets its whole mood through that colour split: cool near-black against warm gold and blue. The print is built to keep the man’s silhouette genuinely dark rather than muddy, so the contrast with the glowing wall behind the seated woman stays as sharp as in the original.
