Description
A young bather sits on white drapery with her back to us, her head turned to the left in profile and her eyes lowered. Her red gold hair hangs loose the length of her back. Behind her, green bushes are laid in with short curling strokes under a grey blue sky, and a patch of pale blue between her and the bushes reads as water.
Across the lower right sweeps a broad passage of rust red, unmodelled, doing the work of a bank or a towel without deciding which. The paint is thin throughout, the canvas texture reads through every part of the figure, and the lower right corner is barely covered at all.
Recorded as a sketch and dated 1890. What survives here is the decision rather than the finish: the whole back of the figure is one continuous movement of the brush.
