Description
A row of trees stands left of centre, their crowns built from short strokes of blue, green and violet laid over a sky that is very nearly white. A pink orange path or bare field curves in from the lower left and crosses the foreground, edged with green grass. Among the trunks sits a small building with a red brown roof, and a slighter tree in rust red and violet stands to the right.
The striking thing is how little paint is here. Large areas of the canvas are barely covered, the sky is scrubbed rather than filled, and the whole picture depends on the contrast between cool blue green foliage and warm pink earth. Renoir signed at the lower left.
Essoyes is a village in the Aube, in Champagne. Our catalogue records no museum for this canvas and no dimensions, so we state neither.
