Description
A young woman moves to the left across the picture, seen from behind and slightly in profile, with both arms raised into a tall bush of pink and white roses. Her auburn hair is coiled and pinned. She is barefoot on rough ground.
Behind and below her the canvas is populated with figures Renoir barely declares: one draped in white close to the bush, others no more than pale marks at the right. The sky is grey blue and clouded, and a hill falls away behind her shoulder.
The unusual thing here is the temperature. Renoir paints almost the whole picture in cool silver blue grey and saves warmth for two places only, the flesh and the roses, so the figure and the flowers she reaches for are lit by the same light and nothing else is.
