Description
Painted in 1866, this early, ambitious canvas gathers a group of friends around a rough wooden table in a country inn, with a waitress in a black dress and white apron clearing dishes as they talk. A large white dog lies stretched out on the floor in the foreground, and rough charcoal sketches and a scrawled menu cover the wall behind the diners.
The palette stays deliberately plain and tavern-like: browns, greys and muted blacks dominate the clothing and walls, so that the white tablecloth, the crockery and the shaggy dog stand out as the brightest passages in the scene.
At its original scale this was a room-filling picture, and our print is made to match that ambition: giclee on canvas or fine-art paper, available up to large formats that bring the whole tavern scene close to life size.
