Description
A young woman with auburn hair and a small flower tucked at her crown gazes softly out at the viewer, her bare shoulders and pale dress rendered in feathery, chalky strokes. She holds a folded fan of blue and yellow low in her lap, its crisp lines standing out against the misty, unfinished-looking background of soft blues and greens. Renoir works here in pastel, and the medium gives the whole portrait a hazy, luminous softness, with only her rosy lips and cheeks offering strong color. This portrait of Mlle Jeanne Samary was made by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1878.
