Description

A young mother sits on a rough stone ledge, a wide straw hat shading her face, nursing an infant who lies cradled across her lap in a long white gown and matching bonnet. She looks directly out at the viewer rather than down at the child, her expression calm and open, while the baby’s plump bare legs and feet push out from under the gown, caught in soft pinkish light. Her salmon pink blouse is painted in loose, dry strokes that let the weave of the canvas show through, and a heavy blue-grey skirt pools around her, its folds built up in broader, flatter passages of color.

The setting is kept spare and architectural: a pale stone wall and ledge behind her, rendered in creams and warm greys, with a few bare, spindly branches sketched in at the upper right against the same neutral ground. Renoir has kept the palette narrow and slightly muted for this period, dominated by the dusty pink of the blouse, the blue of the skirt and the sandy tone of the stone, with the child’s white linen the brightest note in the picture. The paint handling is drier and more matte than his shimmering Impressionist canvases of the previous decade, closer to the firmer, more classicizing manner he was developing through the mid-1880s.

A mother nursing a child outdoors became one of Renoir’s recurring subjects in these years, painted with none of the sentimentality that later reproductions sometimes suggest, but with real attention to the physical fact of a woman’s weight settled on a stone seat and a baby’s body curled into hers. The picture’s quiet, upright pose and the balance of warm flesh and blouse against the cooler skirt and stone give it a steady, grounded presence that would sit comfortably and calmly on a wall without ever feeling static.

The craft

The oil edition of this Renoir artwork is painted by hand on canvas. A canvas art print reproduces the image in ink, with the brushmarks visible in the picture rather than raised paint.

  • Oil editions painted individually by studio artists
  • Canvas prints reproduce the image on canvas
  • Individually quality-inspected before it leaves the studio
  • Made to order in your chosen size and presentation

Materials & Care

Materials

The oil reproduction is painted on cotton canvas; the art print is printed on canvas. Rolled canvas arrives without a stretcher. Stretched canvas is mounted on a wooden stretcher frame; thin and thick frames are separate presentation choices.

On request, the studio provides a certificate for your hand-painted reproduction; it certifies the studio's work, not an original by the artist.

Care

Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid cleaning products, prolonged direct sunlight and damp conditions.

Sizing

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this available in a size other than the original?

Yes, every reproduction is made to order in the size you choose, keeping it true to the original painting's proportions.

Should I choose a hand-painted oil reproduction or a canvas print?

Both are available. A hand-painted oil reproduction is painted by hand on canvas, while an archival canvas print reproduces the image with fine, fade-resistant inks.
