Description
Renoir sets two women in loose, brightly coloured dresses, one in ochre and rose, the other in red, seated together in a flowering meadow beneath the spreading branches of a tree at the left of the canvas. Beyond them the ground falls away through masses of green shrubs and white blossoms toward a distant valley, where the pale walls and roofs of a small village catch the light against blue hills and a sky streaked with cloud.
The two figures are painted with the same loose, unblended strokes as the landscape around them, folded so closely into the greenery that they read almost as part of the view rather than as a separate subject, a favourite device in Renoir’s late southern landscapes.
The original is held by the Barnes Foundation. What is offered here is a faithful reproduction: a hand-painted oil version on canvas, recreated stroke by stroke by a professional painter, or an archival canvas print made with fade-resistant pigment inks, available in a range of sizes.
