Description
Renoir paints a small child standing close to the viewer, dressed in a black pinafore over a white lace-collared blouse, gripping a wooden hoop with both plump hands. Fair hair falls loosely around a round, rosy-cheeked face, with wide dark eyes looking slightly to the side.
The background glows in deep red and maroon, patterned faintly with dark floral shapes, throwing the pale skin and white lace into strong relief. Painted in 1875, the portrait is part of the collection of the Baltimore Museum of Art, and shows Renoir’s fondness for painting children at play with a simple toy rather than posed stiffly for the occasion.
What is offered here is not the original portrait but a faithful reproduction: a hand-painted oil version on canvas, recreated stroke by stroke by a professional painter, or an archival canvas print made with fade-resistant pigment inks, available in a range of sizes from close to the original 62 by 49 cm canvas up to a larger wall feature.
