Description
Jeune femme avec une ombrelle japonaise shows a young woman seated in tall grass, wearing a pale blue dress with a white bodice and a spray of flowers pinned in her auburn hair. She holds a small bunch of flowers in her lap, and beside her on the grass lies an open Japanese parasol with a red and black lacquered pattern.
Behind her, loose strokes of green and yellow grass fill most of the canvas, opening on the left to a glimpse of blue water where two small figures in white and red stroll along the bank. Renoir’s brushwork is quick and feathery throughout, with the woman’s blue gown and the parasol’s red spokes standing out against the surrounding greens.
Painted in 1876, this outdoor scene is reproduced as a hand-painted oil on canvas or as an archival print, offered in a range of sizes to suit different walls.
