She wears a dark coat closed with a black bow at the neck over a white collar. Beside her, at the edge of the canvas, the dark crown of a black top hat is visible, suggesting a companion just out of full view.
Renoir works the hat and flowers with quick, colourful touches against the soft pale green of the background, while the coat is rendered in broad, dark strokes that frame the pale face and collar. The contrast between the light background and the dark clothing gives the portrait a crisp, immediate presence.
