Description
This Jeanne Samary study is a very loose, sketch-like bust portrait, painted with broad, rapid strokes rather than fine detail. A mass of warm orange and red suggests hair and a hat above a pale, rosy area standing in for the face, with touches of white and pale blue crossing the upper part of the canvas like a scarf or feather caught in motion.
Renoir surrounds the figure with a cool, blue-green background built from long diagonal strokes, so that the warm orange centre of the composition seems to glow against it. The paint is thin in places, with the woven canvas visible throughout, giving the whole sketch an unfinished, spontaneous energy.
We reproduce this painting as a hand-painted oil on canvas or as an archival print, available in a range of sizes so this loose, colourful study can suit a studio, a reading nook, or a larger wall.
