Description
Italian Woman with Tambourine shows a young woman standing full-length against a dark, shadowy niche, leaning slightly to one side. She wears a white blouse with full sleeves, a yellow scarf knotted at the neck, an embroidered bodice, a dark sash, and a long blue-grey skirt, with woven sandals on her feet. In her lowered hand she holds a wooden tambourine, its skin visible and its rim decorated with a floral ribbon.
Renoir paints the figure with thick, richly loaded brushstrokes, building the folds of the blouse and skirt in creamy whites and soft blue-greys against the warm ochre and brown of the background niche. The yellow scarf and the embroidered detail on the bodice and tambourine ribbon add small bursts of colour against the otherwise muted, earthy palette.
Painted in 1881 and held in the Rosengart Collection, we reproduce this portrait as a hand-painted oil on canvas or as an archival print, available in a range of sizes.
