Description
Houses on a Hill shows a cluster of stucco buildings stacked up a hillside, their walls painted in warm ochre, cream, and soft pink, topped with terracotta and white roofs. A patch of clear blue sky opens at the upper left, while dense trees and shrubs fill the lower half of the canvas, partly screening a low white wall that runs across the foreground.
Renoir builds the hillside town with thick, textured strokes of gold and cream, leaving window openings as loose dashes of blue, red, and grey rather than precise details. The greenery below is painted more freely still, in tangled strokes of olive and dark green, giving the whole scene a sun-baked, southern warmth.
Painted in 1908 and held at the Barnes Foundation, the original canvas measures 26.6 by 29.2 centimetres. We reproduce it as a hand-painted oil on canvas or as an archival print, available in a range of sizes.
