Description
Girl with Basket of Oranges shows a young woman in profile, standing on a sandy rise with the sea stretching out behind her. She wears a full white blouse with loose sleeves, a blue bodice crossed with red straps, a wide belt, and a long striped skirt in cream, pink and blue tones, with dark blue shoes peeking from beneath the hem. In both hands she carries a woven basket heaped with oranges.
The tall, narrow format draws the eye up her standing figure, from the basket at knee height to her hair pulled back in a loose knot. Renoir paints the sea and dunes behind her in soft blues and sandy browns, keeping the background loose and atmospheric so the woman’s white blouse and the orange fruit stand out as the brightest notes in the picture.
Painted in 1890 and held at the Barnes Foundation, the canvas measures 130.5 by 39 centimetres. We reproduce it as a hand-painted oil on canvas or as an archival print, offered in a range of sizes to suit a narrow wall or hallway as well as larger spaces.
