Description
Girl on a Balcony, Cagnes shows a young woman seated close to the picture plane, turning her head toward the viewer with a soft, half-smiling expression. She wears a wide straw hat with a floppy brim and a loose white blouse striped with lavender and rose, its sleeve rolled back to bare her forearm as she rests it on a stone ledge. A loose bunch of orange flowers sits on the ledge beside her arm.
Behind her, a sunlit view opens onto a hillside landscape rendered in broad, blended strokes of green, ochre and touches of pink, suggesting distant rooftops and foliage under a pale sky. Renoir keeps the brushwork loose throughout, softening the forms of the hat, hair and blouse into one another while the flowers and the hillside beyond stay bright and warm.
Painted in 1911 and held at the Barnes Foundation, the canvas measures 43.2 by 52.1 centimetres. We reproduce it as a hand-painted oil on canvas or as an archival print, offered in a range of sizes to suit a small wall or a larger feature space.
