Description
Gabrielle mending shows the model seated in profile, her dark hair swept up into a bun, concentrating on a piece of sewing held in both hands. She wears a loose red dress gathered at the yoke, its wide sleeve falling back from her forearm as she works a needle through a piece of golden-orange fabric.
Renoir builds her face and downturned eyes with soft, warm strokes, a faint smile playing at her mouth as she focuses on the task. The background is a plain, blue-green wall, calm and undecorated, which throws the warm red of her dress and the gold of the fabric in her hands into sharp relief.
Painted in 1908, the original canvas measures 65 by 54 centimetres. We reproduce it as a hand-painted oil on canvas or as an archival print, available in a range of sizes to suit a hallway or a larger wall.
