Description

Painted in 1882, Escalier d’Alger captures a steep outdoor stairway in Algiers, hemmed in by pale walls on one side and lush, tangled foliage on the other. Cloaked figures sit resting on the steps and at the base of the stairs.

Sunlight picks out the deep red-brown stone of the steps and the pale blue and white architecture rising at the top, while dense greenery spills over the wall to the right.
