Description
A young woman with upswept dark hair, held by a beaded copper headband, sits half-turned toward the viewer in a deep navy, off-the-shoulder gown. In her hands she holds an open fan painted with pale blue and cream tones, its ribs fanning out across the lower half of the canvas. Behind her, loose strokes of blue and yellow suggest a flowering shrub, with a warm pink upholstered chair edge visible at her side.
Renoir’s brushwork is soft and feathery throughout, the face rendered with more finish than the impressionistic haze of the background, a contrast typical of his portrait work from this period. The palette moves between cool blues in the dress and foliage and warm flesh tones in the face and arms, held together by the fan’s pale, patterned surface.
This painting is available as a hand-painted oil reproduction or an archival canvas print, made to order in a range of sizes that respect the true-to-original proportions of the piece housed at the Barnes Foundation.
