Description
Looking out from a shaded hillside path near Cagnes, Renoir frames a wide bay of blue green water below, with a cluster of pale cream buildings climbing the far shore and soft violet hills rising behind under a hazy sky. Dense green shrubs and grasses fill the foreground, their dark tones setting off the luminous water beyond.
The palette is built from cool blues and greens balanced against warm tan earth in the foreground path, painted with the loose, breezy brushwork Renoir favored for the outdoor views he made around Cagnes sur Mer in the south of France.
The painting is part of the collection of the Mead Art Museum. What is offered here is not that original but a faithful reproduction: a hand-painted oil version on canvas, recreated stroke by stroke by a professional painter, or an archival canvas print made with fade-resistant pigment inks, available in a range of sizes to suit any wall.
