Description
A dark-haired woman leans over a fair-haired toddler, holding a small toy rooster out for him while he reaches for a tiny painted figure of a girl. More toy animals, sheep and a goat, stand scattered on the table below, and behind the pair a wall of pink and red floral wallpaper glows warmly.
Painted in 1895 and held by the National Gallery of Art, the canvas (54.3 by 65.4 cm) shows Gabrielle, the family’s nursemaid, playing with Renoir’s young son Jean. The print keeps the small toy figures legible and distinct on the table, since the picture’s charm depends on noticing each one.
