Description

Two haystacks rise from a broad field, the left one tucked beside a tree with dark, drooping foliage, the right one larger and rounder, catching more direct light on its thatched crown. The foreground is turned earth in warm strokes of red, orange and rust, worked in short, energetic dashes with patches of green showing through where new growth or grass survives. Beyond the field, a soft hedge of trees stretches across the middle distance, and past that a hint of village rooftops in dabs of red and violet.

The sky takes up nearly half the canvas, a pale wash of cream, lavender and grey-blue with soft, undefined clouds massing along the horizon. Renoir’s brushwork here is broad and rapid, especially in the foreground field, where individual strokes of red, orange and green sit side by side without blending, so the ploughed earth almost vibrates with color rather than reading as flat ground. The haystacks themselves are built with fewer, more solid strokes of gold and brown.

Dated 1885, this rural scene shows Renoir working close to the outdoor, light-focused practice of his Impressionist circle, in a mode that shares the period’s recurring interest in haystacks as subjects for studying changing light; this version leans warmer and more textured in the foreground than such scenes typically do, with the reddish ploughed field doing as much work as the haystacks themselves.

The picture’s warmth, especially that band of red-orange earth across the foreground, gives it real presence on a wall, while the pale sky above keeps the composition from feeling heavy. The two haystacks provide clear, simple focal points, making this an easy landscape to read from across a room while still holding interest up close in the broken, textured brushwork.

The craft

The oil edition of this Renoir artwork is painted by hand on canvas. A canvas art print reproduces the image in ink, with the brushmarks visible in the picture rather than raised paint.

  • Oil editions painted individually by studio artists
  • Canvas prints reproduce the image on canvas
  • Individually quality-inspected before it leaves the studio
  • Made to order in your chosen size and presentation

Materials & Care

Materials

The oil reproduction is painted on cotton canvas; the art print is printed on canvas. Rolled canvas arrives without a stretcher. Stretched canvas is mounted on a wooden stretcher frame; thin and thick frames are separate presentation choices.

On request, the studio provides a certificate for your hand-painted reproduction; it certifies the studio's work, not an original by the artist.

Care

Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid cleaning products, prolonged direct sunlight and damp conditions.

Sizing
