Description
A generous mass of lilac blossoms, white and soft pink-purple, spills out of a white porcelain bowl painted with small pink flowers. Green leaves thread through the flowers, and the whole bouquet sits against a very dark, almost black-blue background that makes the pale blooms glow.
Painted in 1878, the canvas builds its entire effect from that contrast between the near-black ground and the mass of pale lilac, with the red tabletop below adding a third, warmer note. The print keeps the background genuinely dark rather than lightening it, since the glow of the flowers depends on that depth of shadow behind them.
