Description
A young woman with fair hair gathered under a wide dark hat topped with a pale straw-colored oval crown tilts her head back and gazes upward into flowering branches above her, her lips slightly parted. She wears a sheer white blouse patterned with fine blue dashed stripes, cinched at the waist with a dark blue sash, a gold hoop earring catching the light at her ear. In her lap she holds a small loose bouquet of wildflowers, red, yellow, and white blossoms gathered against her pale skirt.
Painted with the dark, warm ground and closely observed detail of Renoir’s earliest exhibited work, the canvas is signed and dated by the artist in the upper corner, showing the tightly modeled realism he was still developing before his brushwork loosened in the years that followed.
This portrait is offered as a hand-painted oil reproduction or as an archival canvas print, made to order in sizes that keep the proportions of the original 81 x 65 cm canvas, drawn from the version held by the Nizhny Novgorod State Art Museum.
