Description
Worked in soft, chalky strokes rather than blended oil paint, a bather sits with one leg drawn up, bending to touch her foot. The paper’s texture shows through the pigment throughout, and the setting is reduced to a warm orange-red field below a band of blue water at the upper left.
Dated 1919, the year of Renoir’s death, this drawing (in pastel or a related dry medium rather than oil) shows the same seated bather motif he returned to for decades, here rendered with visible, unblended strokes. The print preserves that dry, textured surface rather than smoothing it into the look of an oil painting, since the marks themselves are the point.
