Description

Looking out over a hillside of green shrubs and trees, Renoir sets down a view across Montmartre’s rooftops at the end of the day. A pale, sand-colored building rises above the surrounding houses, their red-tiled roofs scattered through the middle ground, while a hazy skyline of the city stretches away toward the horizon. Above it all, a soft sun sits low in a sky of pink, mauve, and gold clouds.

The whole scene is built from loose, feathery strokes, warm light dissolving the edges of roofs and walls, so that the city feels bathed in the last color of the afternoon.
