Description
A young child looks directly out at the viewer with large, dark, attentive eyes and a faint half-smile, framed by a mass of soft, curly light brown hair. The face is rendered with delicate pink shading across the cheeks, while the lower portion of the picture is filled with a white lace-trimmed collar and a red garment crossed by black ribbon straps over each shoulder, painted in warm pastel tones. The background is a deep, warm brown, kept dark and unbroken so the pale face and bright collar stand out sharply against it.
Dated 1877, this pastel head study is an early example of Renoir’s sensitive portraits of children, built up with soft, blended strokes typical of the medium.
This reproduction of Tête d’enfant aux rubans noirs is available as a hand-painted oil copy on canvas or as an archival giclee print, made to order in a range of sizes to suit any wall, and delivered ready to hang.
