Description

A wide bay opens beneath a hazy, luminous sky, its water dotted with sailboats and fishing craft, while a distant volcanic peak trailing a thin plume of smoke rises on the far shore. Along the curving waterfront in the foreground, tiny figures, carts and horses move along a sunlit promenade that hugs the edge of the harbor.

Renoir paints the whole scene in a haze of pale lavender, soft gold and milky white, letting sky and water blur together so that the mountain seems to float rather than sit solidly on the horizon. The foreground crowd is suggested with quick, flickering dabs of color rather than individual detail, keeping the human bustle subordinate to the vast, atmospheric expanse of the bay.
