Description
This crowded study sheet is filled corner to corner with sketched heads and half-figures of young girls, many wearing wide straw hats trimmed with red poppies, white ribbons, or floral bands. Renoir repeats similar poses from different angles: heads turned in profile, faces tipped downward, hair loose over the shoulders, painted against patches of blue sky and green foliage that suggest an outdoor setting.
Near the bottom of the canvas, two paler, semi-clothed torsos in white appear among the hatted heads, hinting that Renoir was also working out figure poses on the same sheet. Dated 1890 and held at the Barnes Foundation, this study captures the artist’s process of repeating and refining a single motif, the summer hat, across many small variations.
Our reproduction of Study of Heads is available as a hand-painted oil copy on canvas or as an archival giclee print, made to order in a range of sizes and delivered ready to hang.
