Description
Renoir crops in tight on this sitter, filling almost the whole canvas with her face and shoulders. Her dark hair is swept up in loose curls, a few strands escaping at the temple and ear, and her pale, warm-toned face turns slightly to one side with a calm, faintly amused expression. A small red and gold rosette knots the white collar at her throat, set against a boldly brushed black and white checked garment.
The background is split cleanly in two: a warm rust orange fills the upper left behind her hair, while a cool grey-white takes over the right and lower portion of the canvas, sketched in with loose, dragging strokes. The paint handling throughout is quick and confident, built from broad, visible brushmarks rather than smoothed detail, especially in the plaid of her blouse.
This piece is offered as a hand-painted oil reproduction on canvas, made to order by a working artist, or as an archival giclée canvas print. Either option is a reproduction of the original, held at the Smith College Museum of Art, not the original work itself.
