Description
A standing bather, dark hair pinned up, bends slightly to dry her leg with a white cloth, her cheek touched with a warm flush of colour. Beside her a mass of orange-pink drapery is bunched against a screen of warm ochre and brown foliage that reads more like a sunlit wall than an open forest.
Painted in 1895, the picture is built from a narrow, glowing range of warm tones, the pale figure and white cloth the coolest notes in the whole canvas. The print keeps that warmth even and unbroken across the background, so the white cloth still stands out as the clearest, brightest passage in the composition.
