Description

This one is worked in watercolour rather than oil, and the difference shows immediately in how much of the paper is left to breathe. A wide, quiet river fills the lower half of the sheet, painted in translucent washes of blue and grey-violet that let the cream of the paper glow through, especially in the shallows near the bank where the water goes almost pink.

Above the river, cloud takes up most of the composition: layered washes of blue, sage green, and a faint peach, blotted and re-wetted so the edges bleed softly into one another rather than forming hard shapes. It reads as damp, changeable weather, the kind that could clear or thicken within the hour. Along both banks a low line of trees is dropped in with a slightly drier brush, dark enough to anchor the scene against all that soft sky and water.

In the foreground, rocks break the surface of the river, indicated with just a few darker strokes of blue-violet, and reeds are flicked in with quick vertical touches of green that give the water a sense of scale. The signature and the place name are visible in the lower left corner in the artist’s own hand, a small practical note tucked into the wash of colour. Watercolour itself is a rare medium in his surviving output, which is overwhelmingly oil, so a sheet like this stands apart from most of what carries his name.

It is a looser, more atmospheric kind of picture than an oil landscape, better suited to a room where you want softness rather than punch: the pale blues and violets stay quiet across a wall, and only up close do the separate washes and the paper’s own texture come through.

The craft

The oil edition of this Renoir artwork is painted by hand on canvas. A canvas art print reproduces the image in ink, with the brushmarks visible in the picture rather than raised paint.

  • Oil editions painted individually by studio artists
  • Canvas prints reproduce the image on canvas
  • Individually quality-inspected before it leaves the studio
  • Made to order in your chosen size and presentation

Materials & Care

Materials

The oil reproduction is painted on cotton canvas; the art print is printed on canvas. Rolled canvas arrives without a stretcher. Stretched canvas is mounted on a wooden stretcher frame; thin and thick frames are separate presentation choices.

On request, the studio provides a certificate for your hand-painted reproduction; it certifies the studio's work, not an original by the artist.

Care

Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid cleaning products, prolonged direct sunlight and damp conditions.

Sizing

Choose a size and presentation in the options above. Both editions keep the original image proportions.
