Description
Pierre-Auguste Renoir arranges a ribbed cantaloupe melon, its stem still curling above it, alongside a scattering of ripe peaches on a rumpled white cloth. The muted olive-brown backdrop sets off the melon’s green and gold striping and the warm blush of the peaches, painted with soft, confident strokes. Painted in 1905 and held at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the work measures 32.7 x 45.3 cm and reflects Renoir’s late fascination with simple domestic subjects.
