Description
A gap in dark green foliage opens onto a dramatic sky of swirling white and grey clouds, painted with broad, sweeping strokes that suggest the sun breaking through after a storm. A tall bare tree trunk rises on the right, and a narrow path winds down through the undergrowth toward a small, indistinct figure in the middle distance.
The dense trees on either side are built up in layered greens, olive, and near black shadow, giving way to the pale, luminous sky beyond, a study in contrasts between heavy woodland and open light that gives the picture its title.
The painting is part of the collection of the National Gallery of Art. What is offered here is not that original but a faithful reproduction: a hand-painted oil version on canvas, recreated stroke by stroke by a professional painter, or an archival canvas print made with fade-resistant pigment inks, available in a range of sizes to suit any wall.
