Description
This small study shows a woman in a rose pink dress seen from behind and in profile, one hand raised to her partner’s shoulder as she turns in a dance step. Her partner is only loosely indicated in blue, a ghostly outline of a coat and legs sketched directly onto the bare, unprimed canvas.
Left deliberately unfinished, the study captures Renoir working out the pose and movement of a dancing couple for his famous large scale Moulin de la Galette, with broad passages of raw canvas left visible between the worked areas of pink and blue.
This is offered as a faithful reproduction, not the original: a hand-painted oil version on canvas, recreated brushstroke by brushstroke by a professional painter, or an archival canvas print made with fade-resistant pigment inks, available in a range of sizes to suit any wall.
