Description

The canvas is cut narrow and tall, almost like a door panel, and the composition obeys that shape completely: a single woman fills nearly the whole height, caught mid-stride and turning her head back over her shoulder toward whoever is looking at her.

She wears a black hat trimmed with a dark, curling plume, and beneath it her hair reads as a warm auburn mass that nearly fills the upper third of the picture. Her dress is black too, buttoned high at the throat, but her hand has caught the hem and lifted it, opening a gap that shows pale, cream-colored fabric underneath, the only bright note against all that dark cloth besides her face.

The background is left almost bare: a soft ivory-gray wash interrupted by a broad, loosely brushed passage of warm brown that runs down one side like a curtain or a tree trunk, never resolved into anything specific. Renoir isn’t describing a street or a room here, only a black silhouette against pale ground and the small pink flush of a face turned back toward us.

The paint handling is fast and confident where the dress is concerned, thick ropy strokes of black and umber that never quite sit still, while the face is built with much softer, blended touches of pink and cream. It reads like a sketch pushed close to finish rather than a tightly resolved portrait, and that looseness gives the figure a sense of movement the pose alone wouldn’t carry.

Hung on a wall, the format does a lot of the work: tall and slim, it reads from across a room as a dark vertical figure floating on pale ground, with just enough warmth in the hair and hand to keep the eye moving up and down the canvas rather than settling anywhere.

The craft

The oil edition of this Renoir artwork is painted by hand on canvas. A canvas art print reproduces the image in ink, with the brushmarks visible in the picture rather than raised paint.

  • Oil editions painted individually by studio artists
  • Canvas prints reproduce the image on canvas
  • Individually quality-inspected before it leaves the studio
  • Made to order in your chosen size and presentation

Materials & Care

Materials

The oil reproduction is painted on cotton canvas; the art print is printed on canvas. Rolled canvas arrives without a stretcher. Stretched canvas is mounted on a wooden stretcher frame; thin and thick frames are separate presentation choices.

On request, the studio provides a certificate for your hand-painted reproduction; it certifies the studio's work, not an original by the artist.

Care

Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid cleaning products, prolonged direct sunlight and damp conditions.

Sizing

Choose a size and presentation in the options above. Both editions keep the original image proportions.
