Description
A little boy leans low over a table, his cheek almost touching his propped-up hand as he concentrates hard on his writing. His red hair falls forward over his brow, and a red pen or stylus is gripped tightly in his other hand as he forms letters on the paper spread before him. A crisp white collar peeks out from beneath his grey jacket, the only bright note against the muted tones of the room.
Renoir paints the boy’s face and hands with warm, rosy color and careful modeling, capturing the soft roundness of childhood, while the background and table are rendered in broad, hazy strokes of tan and grey that keep all focus on his absorbed expression. The simple wooden chair behind him is barely more than a suggestion of golden brown.
Held at Selwyn College, this tender study of a child at his lesson is available as a wall art reproduction. A Little Boy Writing can be printed on museum-quality canvas in a range of sizes, made to order and shipped worldwide.
