Description
Two sisters sit together on a riverside terrace, a wrought-iron railing behind them and the Seine dotted with small boats in the distance. The older girl wears a wide red hat trimmed with flowers over a dark navy coat pinned with a small posy, while the younger one, in a white dress with a navy collar, wears an even larger hat piled with red and pink blooms. A basket of yarn or wool sits on the railing beside them, and a screen of blossoming shrubs fills the background in soft dabs of white and green.
Painted in 1881 and now at the Art Institute of Chicago, the picture pairs the vivid red of the elder sister’s hat against deep navy and the surrounding greenery, giving the two figures a striking presence against the loosely brushed river landscape behind them.
As a print, that contrast of scarlet, navy, and spring green stays crisp whether reproduced on canvas or fine-art paper. Offered in a range of sizes, it works equally well as a single focal print or grouped with other pieces on a gallery wall.
