Description
A man in a dark coat and cap walks away from us into a sun-dappled autumn forest, a rifle or walking stick over his shoulder and a coat draped across his arm. Two dogs, one golden-coated, one smaller and reddish-brown, wait attentively on the path behind him, their attention fixed on their master as he moves deeper among the trees.
Renoir renders the forest in rich autumn color, birch trunks striped white and grey rising through canopies of gold, orange and green, with pale boulders catching light in a small clearing further back. The brushwork is denser and more detailed here than in his later, looser landscapes, built up with the patient, descriptive touch of an early forest study, each tree trunk and patch of undergrowth carefully observed.
This warm, wooded hunting scene suits a study or den beautifully: available as a made-to-order canvas print in a range of sizes up to large formats, shipped worldwide.
