Description
Renoir paints his young son Pierre in close-up, the boy’s curly reddish-brown hair falling loosely over his forehead and framing a round, rosy-cheeked face. He looks slightly to the side with large dark eyes, his expression calm and a little distant, dressed in a loose white smock with a dark collar just visible at the neck.
The background is worked in broad, dry strokes of olive and mustard yellow-green, a colour Renoir lets bleed warmly into the child’s skin, so the whole canvas reads as one harmony of gold, green and rose. The brushwork is loose and rapid around the hair and clothing, tightening only in the modelling of the face.
This tender portrait is offered as a hand-painted oil reproduction on canvas, worked by hand to recreate its warm colour harmony, or as an archival giclee canvas print made from a high-resolution image. Both are reproductions for your own wall, not the original 1890 painting.
