Description
This late garden sketch dissolves almost entirely into brushwork: a dense, sunlit tangle of yellow-green and blue-green foliage arches over the canvas, built from short, loaded strokes that read as leaves and light rather than defined shapes. Low in the composition, two seated women emerge only as soft masses of rose and salmon pigment, their forms barely separated from the surrounding greenery. A pale ivory sky opens at the upper left, and the foreground dissolves into warm plum and ochre earth.
Painted in 1919 in the garden of Les Collettes at Cagnes, this is Renoir working at his loosest and most instinctive, laying in color and light before form. The result feels less like a finished picture than a record of looking outdoors.
We reproduce this sketch as a hand-painted oil reproduction or an archival canvas print, made to order in the size you choose, with the proportions of the original composition preserved.
