Description
A panoramic little study, far wider than it is tall. The bottom third is meadow in green and yellow green. Across the middle runs a band of dark blue green foliage worked over with heavier blue strokes, and a few touches of pink and white in the right half read as a wall or a roof among the trees.
The top half is all sky: white and cream cloud streaked with pale blue, dragged on dry so the canvas weave breaks it up. A slender feathery tree stands left of centre and is the only vertical in the picture. A dark monogram sits at the lower right.
Cagnes is on the Cote d’Azur, where Renoir would later settle. This is a sketch and is recorded as one, which is why the horizon sits so low and so much of the surface is given over to weather.
