Description

A red-haired, red-bearded man rests his head against his hand, elbow propped on the arm of his chair, looking out at us with a steady, slightly amused gaze. He wears a dark jacket over a white shirt and a loosely knotted navy cravat, the kind of relaxed dress of a man sitting for a portrait among friends rather than posing formally.

Behind him, Renoir dissolves the setting into loose dabs of green, gold, and lavender, suggesting a garden without describing it, so that the sitter’s face and warm coloring remain the sharpest thing in the picture.
