Description
Dense trees in warm gold, rust and green crowd a sunlit grove, their canopies built from thick, loaded strokes of paint. A hint of rooftop shows through the foliage at the right, and the ground beneath is dappled with patches of shadow and warm bare earth.
Painted in 1910 and held by the Crocker Art Museum, the small canvas (27 by 35 cm) reflects the warm, southern light of Cagnes-sur-Mer, where Renoir spent his final years. The print keeps the thick, separate strokes of the foliage distinct rather than blending them, since the density of that brushwork is what gives the grove its warmth.
