Description
A wide, pale sky takes up most of the canvas above a calm bend of the Seine, trees framing the view on both banks. On the left, small figures walk along a grassy towpath beside the water, where a few boats sit moored or drift near the reflection of the far shore; on the right, a row of pale buildings lines the bank beneath a tall tree.
Painted around 1871 and held by the Denver Art Museum, the canvas (43 by 55 cm) is an early Renoir landscape, quieter and more evenly lit than his later, more broken Impressionist brushwork. The print keeps the pale sky and water soft and luminous, so the small figures and buildings stay legible without pulling focus from the openness of the scene.
