Description
Five apples are heaped into a shallow oval dish glazed in pale blue-grey with a soft pink rim, their skins painted in warm blends of yellow, orange, and rosy red. One fruit tips forward at the edge of the dish, a short curling stem visible, while the others nestle together toward the back, one pushed almost out of the frame.
Renoir bathes the whole scene in a warm, russet-brown light, the tablecloth and background blending into nearly the same rust and ochre tones so that the pale dish and its glowing fruit stand out as the only cool, bright note in the picture. The brushwork on the apples is thick and rounded, each one built from a handful of confident strokes that capture both their weight and the soft bloom of their skin.
This warm-toned fruit still life, Apples (Pommes), held at the Barnes Foundation, is offered as a made-to-order canvas reproduction in a range of sizes up to large formats, shipped worldwide.
